spaces for people who see art in everyday life.
I love to create special places for my clients’ lives, collections, music and art.
Work on demanding public-facing projects has attuned me to creating special, well proportioned beautifully crafted homes.
Good design carries meaning. It has a voice.
I have always had an awareness of how space feels around me. As a child I was absorbed with making things out of whatever was at hand- like a toy village out of boxes. This interest in site specificity and what’s immediately available continues to inform my work.
After college, I continued to explore making as an assistant to painters, printmakers, sculptors and textile designers. From these artists I learned to be highly attuned to their visions. These experiences underlie how I work with my architecture clients. During this time I also studied wood and metalworking, ceramics and product design and realized that I wanted to design something experiential and encompassing so I decided to go to architecture school.
There I realized that I wanted to make spaces that reflect who my clients are, how they want to live and what they care about. I build each project from the inside out around what it to be rather than a preconceived idea.
Who I am now as an architect is deeply influenced by my experience at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. Tod and Billie’s studio was an unselfconscious atmosphere that supported deep creative thinking. They valued craft and curiosity and were committed to collaborating with their clients, makers and suppliers at every level. Their iterative approach and their interest in the experiential qualities of space was a perfect fit for me.
We have all have been uncomfortable in certain spaces and we don’t understand why. My quest is to create spaces that feel right. I’m not leading with beauty. Beauty will be the outcome.
“Jill is the superhero of optimizing spaces” - AB Martha’s Vineyard
As an architect I have concentrated on residential, arts and boutique commercial projects in and around New York City. Beautifully conceived spaces create a sense of well being, reflecting the users values and enhancing their experience.
When I’m not doing architecture I’m at the barn, training horses and riders. Decades of horseback riding have taught me to be a good listener, patient, fearless and unafraid of jumping into the unknown.
